7th AFLAS Congress Meeting Vision

SALAS envisions the 2016 AFLAS 7th congress meeting in Singapore to be a continuation of extensive knowledge sharing, networking and education on the best international practices in the laboratory animal science industry in the South – East Asia region and Asia after the 5th and 6th congress meetings in Thailand (Bangkok) and Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), in 2012 & 2014 respectively. This will further strengthen and enhance the standing of Asian laboratory animal science industry internationally.

SALAS is committed to working with AFLAS towards ensuring its successful Congress in Singapore. We are cognizant of AFLAS’ goals and objectives of the Congress with which our goals are aligned. We are confident, with the support of the Singapore government and numerous other supporting organizations, of delivering on our role as the Host Member Organization.

President’s Message

Dear Members, Delegates and Friends,

Following the immense success of the previous AFLAS Congress Meeting held in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur in 2012 and 2014 respectively, it is with great pride, honour and pleasure that I welcome you, on behalf of both the AFLAS Council and Singapore Association for Laboratory Animal Science (SALAS) organizing committees (Planning & Scientific) to the 7th Asian Federation of Laboratory Animal Sciences Associations Congress Meeting here in Singapore, widely known as “Garden City” for our lush greenery or “Food Paradise”, for obvious reasons!

Singapore being a melting pot of ethnicities and cultures, is very much alike AFLAS, where member associations from the various Asian countries have come together with the common goal of knowledge sharing, continuing education and networking. Even after we bid our farewells to each other at the end of this meeting, I hope that we can keep in touch and continue to help and support each other as we strive for higher standards to improve our standing in the laboratory animal science industry globally.

This year’s program promises to be both exciting and fulfilling for one and all. We are anticipating the AFLAS Congress Conference to be SALAS’s most massive conference since 2004 in terms of both international and local delegate numbers. From the pre-congress seminar, off site workshops, to the conference proper, we have planned a program that will cater to different individual’s field of work and special interest. The sessions will cover topics like the 3Rs (which form the cornerstones of laboratory animal science), infectious disease, pathology, biomedical imaging, as well as different animal models including rodents, swine and aquatics, all of which will be presented by internationally renowned speakers.

I invite you to navigate through this website to find out more about the AFLAS 2016 Congress Meeting as well as the host member association, SALAS. Your active participation will be the basis of this conference’s success, and I sincerely hope you will make use of this golden opportunity to ask questions, participate in discussions and gain new insights.  I warmly welcome and look forward to meeting all of you in November 2016!

Tay Yi Quan (Shawn),
AFLAS President

About AFLAS

AFLAS – Asian Federation of Laboratory Animal Science Associations and consists of 11 member countries’ associations.

The aim of AFLAS is to promote through international co-operation Asian Congresses on Laboratory Animal Science for the purpose of reviewing scientific, technical and educational problems in Laboratory Animal Science, to develop other relevant activities in the interest of Laboratory Animal Science, and to contribute to animal welfare.

About SALAS

In Singapore, laboratory animal science began around 1980 arising from an increasing awareness and desire for high standard animal models and the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.

This multidisciplinary branch of science aims at contributing to the quality of experiments in which animals are used and at improving their welfare. It encompasses the biology of laboratory animals, their environmental requirements, genetic and microbiological standardization, prevention and treatment of disease, experimental techniques, anesthesia, analgesia and euthanasia, alternatives to their use, and ethics.

The Singapore Association for Laboratory Animal Science (SALAS) was established in 2004 as a premier non-profit organisation for the community of technicians, scientists, administrators, and veterinarians involved in the field of laboratory animal research and education.

The mission of SALAS is to:

  • Advance responsible care and use of laboratory animals in Singapore and the South – East Asia region
  • Serve as a premier hub in South – East Asia region for the exchange of information and expertise in the care and use of laboratory animals
  • Support the biomedical science industry in Singapore through professional education and practical training
  • Train and educate the staff of biomedical research and teaching institutions in Singapore
  • Promote compliance with the NACLAR Guidelines (National Advisory Committee for Laboratory Animal Research) and AVA regulations pertaining to animals

SALAS aims to promote a high level of responsibility, care and welfare for all laboratory animals through our pursuit of continuing education. To support this growing community in Singapore, it works actively with academic and industry partners to organize events such as:

  • Training sessions for Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) members,
  • Educational classes for technicians and managers to prepare for certification in the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS),
  • Seminars with visiting experts in laboratory animal science, annual regional conferences since 2004,
  • Social events for its members to foster cooperation and understanding between scientists, animal facility staff, regulators, administrators and vendors

SALAS has also established links with regional and international laboratory associations to promote collaboration and awareness of recent developments in the field of laboratory animals. SALAS is affiliated both to Asian Federation of Laboratory Animal Science Associations (AFLAS) and International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS) respectively.

SALAS is proud to acknowledge its association with the major biomedical research establishments in Singapore and to provide specialized support for Singapore’s rapidly advancing Biomedical Sciences industry.

Significantly, through SALAS, Singapore has the largest number (289 as of 29th February 2016) of AALAS-certified staff outside of USA. This embellishes the mission of SALAS to promote the highest standards of laboratory animal care in Singapore. (AALAS – American Association for Laboratory Animal Science)
